The Second Month of School has started :)

Assalamu alaikum!
Alhamdulillah, it is the 5th week of school already...
We have already learned so much:
  • how to write both the long and short date on all our work.
  • printing neatly and correctly.
  • the rules on writing in our journals.
  • in reading we are still reading about school (acceptable and not acceptable behavior).
  • in math we have completed the first chapter of our math book (patterning and sorting) and we have started our second chapter 'Exploring Numbers' (when do we use numbers, how do we use numbers, where do we see numbers, why do we use numbers, etc.).
  • in science we have covered the different between living and non-living things, the needs of living things, characteristics of living things etc.
  • in art most of us completed our friendly monsters and have worked on our apple crafts.
  • in Islamic Studies (taught in Arabic) we covered the following topics 'Allah is Our Great Creator' (Al-Khaliq, Al-Musawwir, Al-Bari)... We completed the simple phrase in Arabic 'Khalaq Allah...'.  Then we moved on to 'Searching for Allah' (Prophet Ibrahim's search for Allah)...  We talked about why Allah is not 'the sun', 'the moon', or 'the shining star' and how Prophet Ibrahim figured out that Allah could not be any of those things.  We used the phrase "Yabhat Saiduna Ibrahim ala Allah...", we mentioned that Prophet Ibrahim 'Khaleel Allah' (friend of Allah). Then we talked about the ones of Allah 'Allah wahed', by starting with the first of the five pillars of Islam... 'Al-Shahadatain', then we moved on to talking about 'Surah Al-Ikhalas'.  We talked about how Allah does not need anyone with Him.  'La ilaha ila Allah', 'Al-Wahd', 'Al-Samad', 'Al-Hayy', 'Al-Qayyum', 'Al-Aliyy', 'Al-Atheem'...  We talked about Tawheed (The believe in ONE God)Student got to reflect about "I love God, He loves me', why do we love Allah? Why does He love us?  'Limada nuhib Allah wa limada huwa uhibbuna'... the name of Allah 'Al-wadud' is what we focused on...
  • in gym/health class we have been practicing the dos and don'ts of being in the gym.  We learned a couple of new games:  'The mirror' and 'Steetcars'.
  • We will be working on social studies after we finish our science unit, we usually alternate between social studies and science in grade one.
*Please note that I usually do NOT send personal emails home unless I feel that you need to be aware of something that happened in class, but please feel free to email me if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, or/and comments.
*Usually I do not send books home because most of the time, but if you need to take a look at the work we are covering in class, please let me know and I can send the book(s) home.
*Also, if you need anything or feel like you would like to meet please email me and we can plan accordingly, inshallah.
*I am sure all of you are aware of our 'Zero Tolerance' rule, in which no one is allowed to touch his/her classmate in any way or manner.  Parents will be notified through an email whenever a student breaks the 'Zero Tolerance Rule'
By working together we will have a successful year, inshallah!

A message from Teacher Nesreen, the Quran teacher :)

Assalaom alaikom wa rahmato Allah dear parents,

I hope you are doing very well. During September, we revised the last four suras the students had in SK (AL-qadr, AL-Zalzalah, AL-Qareaa, and AL-Teen). During Surat AL-Teen activity, the students had the chance to learn how to identify figs and olives by coloring and physical inspection of real samples.

This year, the students will start for the first time learning ‘Nooranyah Rules”. We started the first lesson ((The single alphabets)). Enclosed, is the link for the 1st lesson. We reached the 5th row. Please help your child to keep listening and focusing on pronunciation. Especially, for the heavy letters:
خ ص   ض غ ط    ق ظ

Welcome to a New School Year :)

Assalamu alaikum!
Alhamdulillah, it is the 3rd week of school already...
We are getting things started:
  • by practicing our simple daily routines (lining up, listening, following instructions, respecting the rules, positive reinforcement and consequences, etc.).
  • in writing we are focusing on the correct way in which to write each letter in its capital and lower case form.
  • in reading we are reading stories about school (rules/behavior) as a class and then talking about the lesson/moral.
  • in math we have started working on sorting and patterning.
  • in science are learning about living and non-living things.
  • in art we are working on our friendly monsters.
  • in Islamic Studies (taught in Arabic) we have been talking Hajj, Prophet Ibraheem and Prophet Ismail.  We have had a class (with the help of Teacher Dian, the Islamic Studies Coordinator) where we looked for background knowledge (what had learned about Islamic Studies in Arabic in JK & SK) so that I can plan accordingly.
  • in gym/health class we are working on being safety, working together, and eating healthy.
By working together we will have a successful year, inshallah!

A message from Teacher Nancy, our librarian :)

Dear Parents,
Asalamu Alaikum
Where has time gone, SubhanAllah! It seems like yesterday when everyone was getting ready to go back to school. The month of June is just around the corner and with it is the long awaited summer vacation. It is a well-known fact that during summer, the dreaded "Summer Slide" sets in. However, the following ten steps can help prevent the summer slide
 in your child

1. Take a book. The best way to get your kids reading is to have books available, so take them with you, whether it's in the car, at the beach or waiting at the doctor's office.
2. Summer recharge. Plan ahead for a fun reading-related trip midway through the summer to reignite the love of books and reward kids for reading. It doesn't have to be anything fancy; the trip could simply be camping like a character in a favorite book.
3. Explore hobbies. Reading is extra fun when the subject matter involves your favorite things. Look for books that match your kids' personal interests, such as dinosaurs or gymnastics.
4. Magazine madness. Plenty of popular kids magazines can be delivered to your home for an exciting surprise in the mailbox that makes an excellent reason to flip it open and start reading.
5. Road trip reading. A long car ride is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to enjoy an audiobook together. You can discuss the story over lunch breaks and fuel stops to engage even further with the book.
6. Pen pals. Work with other parents to set up pen pals for the summer and have kids write letters back and forth to practice their reading and writing skills.
7. Act it out. Encourage kids to gather some neighborhood friends and create a play based on a favorite book. This helps kids understand the characters and story lines by bringing them to life.
8. Take direction. Ask kids to read the directions for a classic summer project, like setting up a tent or making a snack for a picnic. Whether they are directing you or doing it themselves, reading and understanding directions builds important skills.
9. Head to the library. Most libraries offer fun and interactive summer reading programs for kids that include incentives, activities and structure to help get kids excited about reading all summer long.
10. Tap into tech time. If you've committed to limiting screen time for the summer, consider a compromise that lets kids use devices for productive activities, such as reading e-books.

11. I will add an eleventh step. Scholastic Book Fair! Let’s put an end to the
summer slide. For more information, please click on the Scholastic Book Fair link.

A message from Teacher Nesreen, the Arabic teacher

Assalamo alaikom dear parents,

I hope you are doing very well. Today, your child will bring home work sheets that he/she accomplished during the second term (class work, tests,...etc). Please take a look, ask your child about what he/she learned and return back.

These are the letters that we learned during the second term:
(د / ك / ن / ي / ج / س / ف / ح / ز / ص)
The student should know how to write it at the beginning, middle, and at  the end of the word. Should write and read simple words that include these letters. Also, should have the ability to mention examples of words that have these letters.

I would like to thank all the students and the parents who were taking care of doing their home works and submit them on time.

Please do not hesitate to contact me, if you have any questions or concerns at :          nzahedah@abraarschool.com

Jazakom Allah khairan for your cooperation
